J. Arthur Cogan

Mr. J. Arthur Cogan was born in Ottawa. He is married and has two children. He graduated with Honours at the University of Ottawa Law School and was awarded the Labour Law Prize.

In 1963, he graduated with Honours the Ontario Bar Administration Course and was awarded both Civil Procedure Law Prizes. He was the first law student in Ontario to article with the Ontario Crown Attorney's Office in 1965.

He was appointed Assistant Crown Prosecutor in 1965, prosecuting both provincial and criminal offences, including capital murder.

In 1966 he entered private practice as a Trial lawyer in both civil and criminal defence work.

In 1976 he was appointed as Queen's Counsel.

J. Arthur Cogan established the Law offices of J. Arthur Cogan in 1994, after 28 years as a senior partner with the law firm Cogan and Cogan. Mr. Cogan has more than 36 years of legal experience.

In 1985 he successfully obtained a large medical malpractice judgement, a leading case in anaesthesia and was one of the largest awards in Canada at that time. Since 1985, he has achieved many multi-million dollar settlements for his clients, especially in the medical malpractice area, which requires, on the part of the lawyer, a high degree of expertise and knowledge in the field of medicine. In particular, Mr. Cogan takes on severe birth injury cases which requires specialised knowledge and expertise in the field of obstetrics. Mr. Cogan is often heard on CFRA.

Mr. G. Todd Barney was born in Ottawa and completed his legal studies at the University of Western Ontario in 1992. He articled with the law firm of Cogan and Cogan in 1992-1993. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1994 and began practicing with Cogan and Cogan.

In late 1994, he joined the Law Offices of J. Arthur Cogan as senior associate. Since that time, he has appeared before all levels of Courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada and Ontario Court of Appeal, as well as various administrative boards and tribunals.
